John entered military service in 1946 and has now reached the century mark with his sharp wit, positive outlook, and enduring love of life fully intact. During our visit, we enjoyed spending quality time with John and learning more about his experiences and perspectives.
This celebration was attended by approximately 25 family members, friends, and staff members from The Vi at Grayhawk. During the gathering, I had the opportunity to ask John what he believes is the secret to living a long and fulfilling life.
John’s answer was both practical and memorable. He shared three rules for longevity:
- Understand and evaluate risk. Having spent his career in the insurance industry, John explained that risk assessment played an important role throughout his life. Knowing how to recognize and manage risks proved to be an asset.
- Never take a fall. Simple advice, but as John emphasized… avoiding falls is critical to maintaining health and independence as we age.
- Eat a balanced diet. Good nutrition has been another cornerstone of his long life.
John also added one caveat with a smile: “his doctor allows him to enjoy a glass of malt whisky each day or whenever he feels like having one (always in moderation – of course).”
It was a wonderful visit and an honor to celebrate this special occasion with John, his family, and his friends. His wisdom, good humor, and enthusiasm for life continue to inspire everyone around him.
On behalf of American Legion Post 44, we wish John Schwantes a very happy 100th birthday and thank him for his service to our nation. We are so fortunate to be members of Post 44, and I’m positive the world’s newest centenarian (John Schwantes) would adamantly agree! Why? It’s the “best damn Post in the west!”
